The successful candidate will be responsible for determining the technical direction of projects involving optics and mechanical systems. He/she will have the ability to integrate and develop the company’s resources in these areas. This is an outstanding opportunity to work and grow with a leader in medical optics solutions.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Lead teams involved in the development of state of the art medical devices
    • Supply technical inspiration, leadership and consultation to professional co-workers
    • Provide guidance to engineering staff on client-originated projects necessitating the application of new and unique approaches
    • Direct research and development in product development, manufacturing and/or process design
    • Mentor less experienced engineers to develop into "Principal" candidates
    • Lead and participate in meetings, brain storming sessions, presentations to clients & team members and contribute to project proposals and project planning
    • Perform oversight, mentorship, and direction to staff and project-level engineers
    • Encourage informed risk-taking and act as a catalyst for innovation
    • Recruit employees
      • Assign, direct, and evaluate their work
    • Travel to client sites, as needed, for the execution of project goals
      • Travel 10%
  • Lead the development of creative and innovative solutions to technical problems
    • Provide on-call consultation as needed within or outside the company, participating in technical audits and technical decision making
    • Document new ideas and current technical information in design guides and memos
    • Research, study and evaluate new opportunities outside of the realm of today's market
    • Brief management on the latest state-of-the-art developments
    • Identify improvement opportunities and contribute to improvement of processes and products
    • Use analytical skills to understand clients wish list and have enough insight to avoid design mistakes or recognize them prior to production
  • Represent the organization in outside discussions and technical forums
    • Participate in technical societies
    • Prepare technical reports for use by engineering or management personnel for long- and short-range planning, or for use by sales engineering personnel in sales or technical services activities
    • Keep abreast of the latest technology developments to ensure the company sees available opportunities for technical improvements in products and services, and/or cost reductions
    • Maintain a working knowledge of general industry and specific agency approval requirements to ensure compliance is maintained in designs
    • Maintain a working knowledge of the company’s manufacturing operations, to understand the strengths and weaknesses of design concepts from the point of view of manufacturability within the company
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Demonstrated ability and advanced knowledge in medical product design and development
  • Demonstrated success in leading product development projects from concept through commercialization
  • Ability to work with, mentor, and direct engineers and technicians
  • Knowledge and skill as a recognized technical expert in opto-mechanical engineering and the ability to be a technical resource company-wide
  • Understanding of ISO 9001/13485 and FDA requirements
  • Excellent analytical, project management, technical, customer service and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent problem solving, strategic thinking, planning/organization skills
  • Comfortable in multi-tasking in a high-energy environment
Education and experience required:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Optical Engineering disciplines; MS or PhD preferred.
  • 20+ years related opto-mechanical experience
  • Experience working in medical device design and development
  • Experience in leading the design of complex opto-mechanical systems, from concept to production
  • Experience working with small/micro opto-mechanical designs having very tight tolerances
  • The most qualified candidate will be an expert in the following areas:
    • Precision mechanical engineering
    • Precision optical engineering
    • Medical device development
